Chatbox/Shoutbox?
« on: January 12, 2011, 11:54:15 PM »
I think we should have some form of a chatbox (I'm not sure if you can, but it would be pretty cool to :D)
It would be useful just to have a place where you can chat about random stuff whenever you can (quickly and actively :P)
I think that it might require some sort of mod to get a shoutbox, but I'm not so sure how it works or whether it can be trusted ಠ_ಠ"
If you can't, then that's fine :/
But if you can, you might want to get some (more?) mods to keep people from breaking the rules on the chat -__-"
This is just a suggestion, so don't make it a big deal :I

Ehh I hate shoutboxes...I'm sure though there's a SMF mod for a chatbox, maybe set up a IRC channel like #milesluigi :D
I've got nothing to say here.

An IRC channel wouldn't be a bad idea to be honest. But unless you have a pretty active community the channel tends to stay dead too long for me to want to create on right now.

During the summer, I wouldn't mind making a chat for this forum. Only problem is that it might take me longer than the summer cause I'm gone half of it.

But can people tell me some details? Would it be a person to person chat, or a public-forum chat for everyone to see? Chatrooms? What does the server run?

I could add a chatbox to the forum board; it would act functionally like an IRC server. I personally don't think it's necessary; and if anything, it would be a magnet for spam.

To answer your question dylanweber, this website runs on my own VPS. I have complete control of the server, and can do what I want with it. If this means that I have to install some module for apache2 to get something working, consider it done.

I have been working on a HTML, PHP, and Javascript based chat for a while, but I wouldn't want to force anything on you, and add spam/bot prevention.

I agree, and besides a chatbox wouldn't be used very often (at least in my opinion it wouldn't).

This was actually one of the first questions that I was thinking about asking. A chatbox is good if you need to tell someone something in real time. Plus imo it makes for a better friendly forum because it lets everyone get to know each other easier. I mean even if most people here arnt that active there are still people here that are. I think there are more advantages to having a chatbox then disadvantages.
