New bigger better 3Ds
« on: June 22, 2012, 10:05:22 AM »
Happen to be browsing Kotaku and had a funny feeling that they would do this. (They always have in the first place)

I might be picking one up now depending on price and considering its more appealing to me now. They say it should hit US stores in August.

Guess what Evilpoptart? For incentive to buy that 3DS, I will promise you; I will buy you Mario Kart 7 if you buy a 3DS.

The catch? You must play online at least 15 races with me and Wayoshi  :awesome: .

Otherwise, that 3DS looks pretty cool. I'm hopeful that the screen hinges don't break like the DS Lite's hinges did (My 3DS has been holding up well with no broken hinges yet.)

No major titles?
I dunno, but it's fun to replay LoZ:OoT in 3D.  ;D
And as you think Mario Kart 7 is just like the others... well, it is, but it's fun to play Mario Kart on the go, and the one for the DS wasn't that great...
All the good titles are coming out at the end of the year, around 5 months from now. Get the console now (or wait for the price to drop or something) and buy the good games when they come.

I have been doing some thinking. Now I want your opinions on this subject because I am finding it very hard right now to find any faith I have left in Nintendo at the moment.
The recent offer by Miles is extremely tempting. However I am a man of logic and reason, impulse spending occasionally does get the better of me at times. I would like to argue some points I have been mulling over for the past week so see if owning a 3Ds is worth the A. the money B. the enjoyment ill get out of it. C. the games.

Before I go into my main points I would like to describe a small overview on my logic of thinking. Role back to about 1993/1994 I was  between the ages of 4-5 I got my first Gameboy good old reliable grey portable tank. Loved it to death, was the greatest toy of my childhood. I still very vividly and very clearly remember the day I received it, it was pure joy. I have quite a collection of the most popular games for the grey tank. Wario Land, SML, Kirby 1+2, DK, just to name a few. Major hit titles that stand the test of time and still prove to be game greats for that system. As time went on the games list grew and only got better, Fast forward to 1998. The biggest two games of that year that shattered video-game records. Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. OH...MY...GOD... Just like the memory of getting and actual Gameboy to get my grubby little hands on Red and Blue at the time was infallible! My parents managed to get Red for me right away, I still have pictures of me sitting on our couch at the time of the box unopened to preserve that awesome memory. Blue was extremely hard to get during release due to short supply being sent to retailers here in the U.S but in the end it took me awhile but I did mange to get it. Heh kinda funny I remember seeing it in Shopko was the last one and I walked around with it for 2 hours waiting for my mother to get her shopping done.

Back on subject. Then came Yellow, Silver, and Gold. Keep in mind during this time good old grey was still running strong and kicking ass. However in 1996 Gameboy Pocket hit the shelf's a very nice upgrade to the grey tank but sacrificed so much in battery life it wasn't even funny. Rechargeable battery's were hella expensive back then and I had invested in the rechargeable battery pack with AV attachment as-well. The pocket version was nice and very convenient for me at the time as well because I needed  it to x-fer Pokemon between games  ;D Still worked great playing all the older games and the newer games. While in the mist of pokemon mania the year is 1998 Pokemon yellow. With the introduction of yellow game a even newer Gameboy model, Gameboy Color. FINALLY! a Gameboy in color! Still have it and is in excellent condition, kiwi green  :awesome:

Flash forward with the introduction of the Gameboy Color introduced a marketing model that was questionable. The Gameboy color started only have specific titles for that system that was not backwards compatible with the older versions of the Gameboys! From 1989 to 1998 9 years of a system that worked fantastic came to an end. I completely understand why too but newer technology and it was growing. The Gameboy Color only games weren't really that good to begin with and the Pokemon titles were already out so it was just nice to have color for the first time. The Gameboy Color would continue to rule for another 3 years until it happened. Gameboy Advanced, the day my heart sank. Yet again Nintendo pulled a fast one and had another Gameboy in the works but this time increased the crippling blow, a complete overhaul cartridge design and newer games for that specific system only. I do understand why again that it wasn't Nintendo's fault but rather the technology was getting better and better. GBA was released in 2001 by this time it was becoming quite expensive (for me anyway) for people to keep upgrading their systems (I was 11yo) the Pokemon I once new were gone and I had lost interest in the show by now. In 2001 A newer generation was growing up and us  At this point and I the demographic changed. They forced you to upgrade to play the newest Pokemon, (Ruby/Sapphire) because that's how the market was. It was 2001 the PS2 was already out a full year now. HUGE game titles that continued for PS1 days along with brand new games that blew everybody away. What did handhelds have? A new Pokemon, SMW, SMK, Yoshis Island, LOZ Link To The Past. While the PS2 had GTA series, Grand Turismo, MGS Series. I was aging from 12-15yr during this time. Pokemon was out more kick ass games were in!

Nintendo's marketing just wasn't there for me, at least during that time. They rode the coat tales of their flag ships, Mario, Pokemon and Zelda. It happened again in 2004, Nintendo DS. Advanced was already pushed out by a newer better system in 3 years! on top of that guess who lead the game titles. Mario, more Mario, Brain age, Pokemon, and a coat tale ride from Animal Crossing. I stopped at the Gameboy Color. There really was no need to continue paying money for games that were flagships, same recycled games, and systems that would be obsolete in 3 years. I had grown wise to this and just gave up trying to keep moving forward, I did more than that, I moved on. My Gamecube was a huge mistake of that when the Wii was released. I never have forgiven Nintendo for that, you could say im still bitter about it.

So if your still with me or just skipped down to this part that's fine too. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see how Nintendo works these days. It already happened with a bigger better 3DS. I bet some of you are kinda angry about this yes? Least some of the forum posts Ive seen. Pretty much your shiny new 3DS is obsolete already and its only been out a year? For a system that has been out for a full year you would expect Nintendo to have a boat load of 3DS titles lined up for the bandwagon hmm? 2 best titles are not a surprise, SML 3D and SMK 7. The reason why they are holding off their other flagship titles is because of one reason. The Wii U

In short I ask you all this. Give me legitimate reasons why I should buy a 3DS knowing these key points:

1. Full year into release has seems to have limited game titles? I think it is very obvious that they are going to string people for as long as they can with just few good games while everything else falls flat
2. Obsolete at a TBA date with the Wii U right around the corner. Why program a game on 3Ds when could be making it for the Wii U.
3. Purchasing a 3DS is currently quite a bit of change. If purchasing one you have to consider the money vs the enjoyment I would receive out of it. Worth the exchange? Not for $200
4. Purchase a 3DS and receive free game seems very tempting, to me why have a system with only one game to play? I may not have the intent to purchase another title knowing that reason 1 and 2 are in the back of my mind.
5. Saying they are good games and are fun is not a solid leg to stand on. While this maybe true seems weak at best.
6. Why purchase a system for recycled games. How many times can you play Mario? Does it always have to be about Mario or Zelda?

I'll try to address each point with as objective as an opinion as possible. Note that I have a small conflict of interest here, as I do want to race you in Mario Kart 7, but I'll do my best to be objective here.

The game titles available are still limited. In my case, I bought a 3DS after the original model had a price drop from $249.99 to $169.99. I bought my 3DS for Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Since then, I've played OOT3D, Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7. OOT3D is exactly what is it. Mario Land 3D is an alright Mario game. It's not great like Super Mario Galaxy, but it's good. Mario Kart 7 is Mario Kart again, but I'm greatly enjoying it. At the time of this post, I'm over 9000 VR going for 10,000 VR. I know there's a good Kid Icarus game, and a good Fire Emblem game in the works for the 3DS as well. If you want something non-Nintendo, there's a Kingdom Hearts game, Street Fighter 4, Sonic Generations, Rayman 3d, and other games that I don't care for.

The Wii U will not obsolete the 3DS. One's a home console and one's a handheld. I'm actually not interested in a Wii U at this time; I probably will be once a definite title I want is announced. Besides, the Nintendo DS wasn't abandoned when the Wii came out; if it was there wouldn't be a New Super Mario Bros (or New Super Mario Bros Wii :P)

Nintendo's bigger challenge, right now, is staying in the same Market with smartphones and other mobile devices. It's my personal belief that, at some point, Nintendo must make a handheld that's also a mobile to stay in the Market. I would like to have a Nintendo phone. :) (We may see this as Nintendo's next console. If it's not, then I predict they're going to lose their mobile market.)

With regards to the enjoyment of the console, let me say this. At some point in time, someone will homebrew the 3DS. I don't know when it will happen: It could happen tomorrow; It could happen 4 years from now. However, just like a cracked PSP, a homebrewed 3DS will be a joy. The specifications of the 3DS are very good, and it's painfully obvious that the device is capable of more than Nintendo is using it for. That, and I want to play Super Metroid on my 3DS.

I would also like to point out a pattern Nintendo has with their consoles. The 3DS is able to play 3DS games and DS games. The original DS was able to play DS games and GBA games. It's safe to assume the next console will play Next Gen Nintendo games, and 3DS games.

I'm not going to sweeten my offer anymore. Know that the 3DS is only about a year young, and the original DS had a life span from 2004-2011. My game collection for the original DS is 6 games (partly due to borrowing games, keep in mind.) To conclude, you started this thread Evilpoptart showing interest in the 3DSXL. Think about how long it takes you to earn enough money to buy it; then, think about the amount of joy the 3DS could bring to you. Your answer is there.

Have you bought one yet?

If you loved the original Pokemon then you'll enjoy black and white and black 2 and white 2 a whole lot. Like you, I played the first Pokemon games and every one afterwards so I know a good Pokemon game when I play one, and these are great. One of he best thing about the 3DS/3DSXL is that they can play DS games. Backwards compatibility ftw.

I bought a 3DS when they first came out and I switched from that to a 3DSXL. I can say that the hinges are strong or most certainly feel that way on the XL. Nintendo learned their design lesson with the DS Phat. I also love the bigger screen and the extended battery life. I'll admit, the 3DS' battery life sucked majorly. It was one of those key problem areas of the system. The XLs is a whole lot better though. I can safely say that due to having owned both.

The 3DS will not go ignored. Sure, it had a slow start and that seems to be a problem area for Nintendo and not just a system problem. Its starting to finally pick up with Sticker Star, Plus exciting new 2013 releases coming soon such as Animal Crossing Luigis mansion sequel, and a new Pokemon Mystery dungeon as well.

If you still don't have it, get it. :V

I picked up Fire Emblem Awakening today. I spent the last eight hours that I should have spent working on homework playing. It's a damn good Fire Emblem. The pairing system works better than expected, although I find it a little unpredictable at times.

I may have made a bad choice by playing Classic Hard right out of the gate. It's not that I can't handle it, but I'm averaging 3-6 resets per map while I figure out my battle strategy. One of my biggest problems is that I forget I can't "rescue" a unit like I could in earlier fire emblems. If one of my units has used their turn, and their in danger, welp, I better hope the RNG is on my side.

It's a minor thing, but I love the quotes your characters say when the level up. They'll comment if they get a good or crappy level up.

I got it the day it came out.  Complete with artbook and everything.  Been having a ton of fun with it.  This is the first Fire Emblem I've played and it's been a riot so far.
